There is a familiar saying that goes something like this:  "you can fool some of the people all of the time; you can fool all of the people some of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."   Most of us know examples that prove the practical truth of that statement.  But there is also some spiritual truth in that statement as well:  when it comes to a person's true spiritual condition we can sometimes be fooled by someone who appears to be one thing on the outside but is totally different on the inside.

Jesus told a story about people who are spiritual imposters, spiritual frauds and fakes.  There was a man who planted wheat in his field.  Under the cover of darkness his enemy planted weeds in the same field.  When his servants discovered wheat and weeds growing together they suggested that the weeds be pulled up.  The wise owner knew that the weeds and the wheat looked almost indentical and that it would be difficult to pull up the weeds without also pulling up some of the wheat.  He also knew that the roots of the weeds and the wheat grew together and that pulling up the weeds would also uproot some of the wheat.  His wise instruction was this:  wait until the harvest and it would be evident to all which plants were weeds and which were wheat.  The harvester could then easily harvest the wheat and pull up the weeds to be destroyed.  (Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43)

The spiritual lessons in this parable are very important:  first, every person either belongs to God (wheat) or to the devil (weed).  There are no other choices:  you either know God by faith in Jesus Christ or you are spiritually lost and separated from God.  Secondly, there is a sure harvest coming someday.  Jesus spoke of a judgement day when the wheat and the weeds would be separated.  The most important thing for every person to consider is this:  am I ready for that judgement day?  Has there ever been a time in your life that you trusted Jesus Christ to be your Savior and Lord?

In His service,

Gregg
